How is othello honest
Ay, indeed! Discern'st thou aught in that? Is he not honest? This quote, talking about Cassio, is of the best uses of dramatic irony, proving once again that Iago has different intentions mentioned in the soliloquy at the end of Act 2 than being talked about in this quote.
Cassio: "Reputation, reputation, reputation! O, I have lost my reputation! I have lost the immortal part of myself, and what remains bestial. My reputation,. Iago, my reputation! Iago: "As I am an honest man, I thought you had received some bodily wound. There is more sense in that than reputation. The problematic theme of honesty is shown through the use of variety of techniques and quotes. Honesty is not always as it seems.
This applies to all the characters as each of them perceives honesty in different ways. These quotes demonstrate how Othello sees Iago and how wrong he actually is. Iago works this nickname to his advantage to intentionally cause harm. Iago is capable of manipulating, brainwashing and moulding the other characters to satisfy his need for revenge against Othello. Because Iago had the reputation of being an honest man, Othello was easy to persuade and twist so Iago could have his revenge.
For example when Iago makes himself believe that Othello has had an affair with his wife, even though he knows that it is false. Iago played with his reputation of honesty and he made it twist to his own desires, which was to take revenge on Othello. Honesty is a virtue seen in some of the characters, but the one character hat seems to stand out is Desdemona.
If Othello was white, Othello wouldn't have been insecure, his relationship with Desdemona wouldn't be disapproved of and Iago might have hated Othello less. That is, of course assuming that Othello is white and so is everybody else. If Othello were white and everyone else was black, the story would be much the same because Othello's insecurity stems from his feeling of otherness, his feeling that he was different from everyone else. Othello has in fact been staged in this way, with a black cast and a white Othello.
It has also been staged with actors playing Othello who are not black but are different from the rest in some other way. Cassio receives Othello's estate, not Gatino, because he was the most loyal to Othello.
