Right before Mickey embarked on his journey, Minnie gave him the bear while they were on the pier by a beautiful, rustic lighthouse in Cape Cod. Shocked, he hugged the bear tightly and placed it in his duffel bag. Mickey kissed Minnie on the cheek, and she blushed. Every time Mickey went on a trip, he made sure to pack Duffy in his duffel bag. Mickey and Duffy continue to go around the world together, sharing their photos with Minnie every time Mickey returns to her.

When Mickey and Duffy returned from their first voyage together, Duffy suddenly felt a bit sad. He watched Mickey and Minnie reunite and wished he had a best friend, too. As Mickey told Minnie the stories of their adventure, Duffy looked longingly at the sea. He jotted a message down and placed it in a glass bottle, asking for a friend.

Duffy placed the bottle in the ocean and watched it drift away. He picked up a heart-shaped seashell in the sand and put it in his pocket. Minnie noticed Duffy, and immediately started making Duffy a friend once she got home. Minnie loves pink, so she created a rosy pink teddy bear with beautiful blue eyes and a brown bow on the top of her head.

Duffy was shocked at how quickly he and ShellieMay became friends. From that day on, they were the best of friends, just like Minnie and Mickey. After a few hours of visiting landmarks, they decided to split up—Minnie and ShellieMay went shopping and to look at art, while Mickey and Duffy decided to take a walk and find some tasty gelato ice cream.

Mickey and Duffy found the perfect gelato shop. Duffy ordered pistachio and strawberry gelato, which he never had before! With the rise of Duffy's popularity, Imagineers noticed many guests purchased multiple plush of Duffy, giving the bears unique names and costumes. That inspired Imagineers to create a companion to Duffy—his best friend, ShellieMay. Based on the pair's increasing popularity, Imagineers decided to develop an entire collection of characters, each with a distinct personality and talent: artistic cat friend, Gelatoni, dancing rabbit friend, StellaLou, inventive dog friend, CookieAnn, and musical turtle friend, 'Olu Mel.
